On our behalf

This week the dancers of NDT were getting ready for our premiere of the company's opening program of the season - "Signature".  That means even tighter time for us to do all of our work for Switch.  Thank goodness for Manon helping us out in all areas and keeping us on track.

In the meantime we have also acquired some Open Path footage taken from this year's program book photographer - Patricia Ribas.  She will be doing individual photo shoots to represent each choreographers piece in the Switch program and has recently been very present in getting to know us and what we're all about.  We're interested to see greater depths of the work represented through "not necessarily" dance photography...

But for now some clips of experimentation for those who are curious.

Upwards and Onwards

This Monday September 12th Switch had it's first of the four jam sessions called Open Path.
It has proven to be quite a magical evening and space in which there is a lot of room for development, exploration and more enjoyment.
We were pleasantly surprised and delighted to have many students from the upper levels of the Koningklijk Conservatory letting loose, joined by free lance musicians,  dancers, painters and photographers from our area.  Not every one is a professional in what they explored there but the freedom of the atmosphere was such that every one created and expressed in relation to each other. Among other things including great music, there were dancers lifting singers, dancers painting, dance photography, an amazing flutist creating for us without his flute, a shovel used as a prop guitar, multi-lingual countdowns, and some beautiful dance moments between colleagues.  Perhaps the highlight was an impromptu mass of humans become worms...
We would be happy to have more people from the community trying any art for the first time at Open Path, and also more visual artists to enhance our depths - so please - tell your friends and come one, come all.

                                       A little brush stroke

After that creative initiation some rehearsals started happening as more choreographers take the plunge and sign up with all their various ideas to be part of the actual performance in January.  Among these ideas, again this year, will be a film if circumstances and funds allow.

In practical matters:  Roger has been a maniac on facebook and with his social networking to get our word out there.
Celia also has the hefty and never ending task of fund raising still on the must-to-do list. No one seems to envy her on that front although Manon has been diligently working on a potential sponsorship project through her contacts this week that we hope can help us.

Off to another meeting . . . . . . There are plans to be made for details of the actual event evening....Check back here for more details on that....

Coming Soon: Open Path

The Switch team had their 2nd meeting last night and it feels like a lot has happened since the first one.

There was a never-dull Switch demo at the Uit Festival with pieces by Georgi Milev and Spencer Theberge.  There was also the pleasure and anticipation of meeting our potential audience for January.
Here's what Carolina had to say about her day there:

"My experience of the Uit Festival in the Spui Theater was really nice. I met Celia first in the Lucent Dans Theater to pick up last year's Switch t-shirts with the hope to sell some and make some small contributions to the budget. We had a nice table where we put a few Switch '12 portfolios, and also the flyers. People were shy at first and didn't dare to ask much. But within 1 hour or so I started to relax, and not mind to welcome people and explain what our goal for switch 2012 is. A good thing is that many didn't know what Switch was, and took flyers, and gave me their contacts...yeah!.

I stayed for at least 4 hours, and just before the show for Switch started (at 16.00) there was such a line up for the grote zaal!. Really exciting to see."

Our "Fans" at the Uit Festival.

Our next event, however, will be “Open Path” this Monday September 12th from 19:00 to 21:00 at the Lucent studios.(see the facebook page so you can register or email switch.production.team@gmail.com).
As part of the team’s desire for connections outside of ourselves we decided to embellish some small jam sessions a few of us held last year with musician friends. This time we are opening it up to any one who wants to join in for artistic creation and/or collaboration in any art medium in a multi-disciplinary workshop setting.  There will be some musicians from the Koninklijk Conservatorium, artist Bernie Autsema (details below) and dancers from NDT.  We hope for professional and non-professional participants and an opportunity for people to explore outside of their ordinary. Interaction, inter-inspiration, creation…. We are leaving it quite open with a few task ideas ready and we’ll wait to develop things for when we meet the participants. The tag line is “Let’s see what happens”.  But from past experiences – it will be good whatever it is.

As for other business:
Right after our first meeting Carolina dove into her perfectionist work on the merchandise that will be sold at the Switch performance in Januaryfor Jeugd Cultuur Fonds.  She is working with Kees Knap – zeef druk, www.keesknaapzeefdruk.nl, who have generously agreed to do the printing for the Switch merchandise as one of our sponsor’s.  Caro apparently had a very positive meeting with Kees and Ingrid over a week ago to discuss the creations.  She describes them as being a very open and accommodating duo and was happy to recommend them to anyone looking to have their visions carried out.

Carolina also met with Bernie Autsema - www.bernie-autsema.nl.  Bernie is a professional artist and long time friend of NDT. She has been sketching and painting company dancers in rehearsal for almost 21 years.  Not only is Bernie’s work going to be seen on much of Switch’s marketing material’s this year but she and Carolina worked together in a special session with company dancer Karyn Banquet to create images for Carolina’s “surprise” merchandise items.  Bernie has always been very generous with us and we feel very fortunate to have her working with us on this particular project.

After consultations with NDT administration on schedules and logistics, the first rehearsal schedule will go up tomorrow….  Choreographers can sign up after our working hours whenever there is space at the Lucent studios to start working on their pieces with their colleagues.  In the past it has started calmly and slowly with preparations mounting to last minute cram sessions in January….. here we go.....

Switch '12 begins with a sample at Uit Festival!

Charity;  choreography;  community;  career transition;  collaboration;  sharing opportunities;  art.

The Switch team tried to combine a lot of our values and ideas into a single message.  This year's team leader Celia Amade came up with a single and clear expression:
To connect people to each other through art.

Switch is a yearly charity event created and organized by the dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater.  It is a performance, celebration and art evening built around works choreographed and performed by the dancers of NDT.  All proceeds go to the charity.  Begun in 1988 by NDT dancers to raise money for their HIV infected colleague, Switch has since become a regular, developed and anticipated show.

After raising 23.000 euros for Care and Share India last year through Switch'11 we are now focusing the good will on  Jeugd Cultuur Fonds - www.jeugdcultuurfonds.nl
Jeugd Cultuur Fonds is a dutch organization providing art and culture experiences to children in Holland who don't otherwise have such opportunities.  This charity seemed to be an obvious choice for this year's vision since we wanted to focus attention on giving back to our community, and being more involved with the place where we live and work.

And so we begin the work!
This year's project committee consists of Celia Amade (our leader),  Carolina Mancuso, Roger Van der Poel, Spencer Theberge, and Heather Myers.  We also have an important intern provided us by the company to help out - Manon Zoer.
After our first meeting of the season we have gone our separate ways to work on Switch in our free time between regular rehearsals. We all have our separate areas to take care of including sponsorship, scheduling, marketing, charity, promotional events, outreach workshops, internet and communications, merchandising, party planning, etc.

Celia and Manon have been busy preparing flyers and postcards in preparation for our Uit Festival presentation this Sunday September 4th at 16:00. It is at Theater aan het Spui in the Grote Zaal and will consist of 2 pieces from Switch '11.  The choreographers and their dancers have been preparing these re-stagings for you to see.

We hope to see you there for the season's first public taster of what Switch is and to share with you information about our activities!
Check back here for more updates on what we get up to and the connections we make!

See below a photo of our 1st meeting - Manon is clearly saying something VERY interesting...
